What is Motivation?

When we think of motivation, the thoughts which may to mind are either the image of an enthusiastic athlete craving for a victory or the stern animated look of a fervent business man who yearns to be recognized by Forbes. Motivation is also about basic survival, a desire to quench our innate yearnings. However, all forms of motivation are still very important irrespective of what we habitually view the term as. Simply put, motivation is something that motivates. It is the basis by which people act the way they do as well as the reason they desire the things they want. So many hypotheses about the subject matter have been stipulated ranging from Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs to Clark Hull’s Drive Reduction theory. Based on a lot of psychological theories, motivation can be regarded as a succession whereby thoughts precede actions, actions influence performance, performance drives thoughts and the cycle begins all over again. There are many elements to this succession such as belief, effort, and purpose which have an effect on a person’s motivation. These theories stipulate that motivation is an existence that lies entirely within the individual rather than a result of socio-cultural activity. However, socio-cultural theories insist otherwise. According to neo-behaviorist, Clark Hull, the desire to preserve a stable psychological state is the incentive for an individual’s behavior. This desire to maintain a state of physiological balance is known as Homeostasis. Hull’s theory holds that people are motivated by their desire to reduce their needs. However, there are several aspects of motivation that this theory fails to explain. [3] It is difficult to discuss needs and desires without talking about Abraham Maslow and his theory on the hierarchy of needs. His theory is a frequently adopted method for categorizing human motives. Maslow’s theory sums up that, from the essential to the complex, there are needs that are more important than the other and that an individual advances to the next level of needs only after a more essential desire is at least minimally fulfilled. Where exactly does motivation stem from? Motivation can be broken down into two different theories. There really can’t be much to discuss regarding motivation without throwing more light on the subject matter of incentives. This simply refers to the stimulants which boosts a person or people to act in a certain manner. Such stimulants can be identified by the question: ‘What makes me want to study for an exam?’ Or ‘What makes want to apply for this particular job?’ Based on incentive theories, our motives and incentives could be internal or external. An individual’s external motives differ from internal motives in the sense that the former is often used to accomplish outcomes that the former wouldn’t be useful for. A student is externally motivated if his basic desire is to triumph over his course mates and not to acquire the knowledge from the course. On the other hand, an athlete whose desire is to live a healthy lifestyle rather than to participate in a competition can be said to be internally motivated to workout. Purpose is very important. ‘Why do I want to do this?’ Recognizing how important purpose is with regards to motivation ensures that people are able to spell out the actual intention behind their work and their ambition. It is very much recommended. Motivation is a very important aspect of living. It is also very important to know how to sustain it. Staying focused is one important tip one should adopt. Maintaining a positive mindset is necessary to keep us focused on those things we desire rather than those things which we don’t. Apparently, focusing on the latter is bound to cause an inertia which is a major hindrance of progress. While we maintain focus, it’s best to have a clear cut idea of that which we want. A positive mind without a definite direction whether it is a financial plan for business expansion, a workout plan to improve one’s lifestyle or an academic goal, you need to have a plan to achieve it. It should be clearly defined and followed through conscientiously. The importance of knowledge cannot be overemphasized. Whether you choose to watch help videos online or read books about the success stories of others, knowledge and inspiration is required in order to stay motivated. This should make a person empowered and driven and draw out their competitiveness and enthusiastic spirit. As long as we have incentives we are bound to stay motivated. It is not advisable to solely focus on the end result and ignore the entire process because therein lies a lot lessons to learn and improve on ourselves.
